Virtual Private Networks
Dedicated employees need
dedicated virtual private networks
Do your employees keep working when they’re away from the office? Maybe they travel; maybe they get enthused about a project; maybe it’s a normal part of their jobs. Whatever the reason, if your employees are working away from the office, they probably should have secure remote access to your company’s computers and network. The way to accomplish this via a virtual private network (VPN).
How does a virtual private network operate? Believe it or not, IT technicians describe VPNs with very user-friendly terms: tunnels and endpoints. Your employees’ encrypted data flows through tunnels. The endpoints are the devices between which the data travels. When employees connect to your company’s virtual private network, a private data “tunnel” is created from their devices, through your company’s firewall, and into your company’s servers or computers. When they disconnect from your VPN, the tunnels vanish.

Secure virtual private networks solve a lot of cyber security problems. First, you’re not exposing your company’s data and documents as it travels over public or unsecured networks. Second, your employees don’t have to download company documents to their personal laptop or tablet computers; they can remotely access their company desktops and use the programs and files just as if they were in the office. They can view and manipulate the files with their laptop screens and keyboards, but the actual data remains behind the company firewall. Finally, you can choose which databanks, folders and files each individual employee can access remotely, and which are blocked, allowing you to fulfill requirements for privacy and interdepartmental security.
